The Staff

Jon Kirby

On March 3, 2013, The Boston Globe Magazine ran an article entitled "10 questions to ask when choosing a summer camp." Read Director Jon Kirby's answers here.

Our enthusiastic, dedicated and loyal staff are the heart of our program, and provide a warm, happy, safe environment for our campers.

Children are supervised at all times. Our goal is for every child to feel welcome, cared for and respected. We maintain a low camper to staff ratio in all groups. The ratio is 5 to 1 for the youngest groups, and 8 to 1 for the older groups, which is far below American Camping Association requirements.

Most members of our staff come back every year - for the summer of 2013, only 3 of 100 counselors are new hires. Each unit is staffed by a unit leader who is frequently a veteran staff member and often a certified teacher. They are assisted by senior counselors, age 17 and older; and assistant counselors, age 15 and older, who come from area colleges and high schools.

All staff participate in an extensive pre-camp training program, which includes emergency procedures, safety, positive discipline techniques and leadership training. All staff must undergo an extensive background check, including CORI and SORI checks.

Pilgrim Day Camp has a nurse on duty full time, and an EMT on duty during extended day and overday experiences. Fully certified and experienced life guards are also on duty at all times.

The camp complies with regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and is licensed by the local board of health. Parents may submit written requests for Pilgrim Day Camp’s policy regarding staff background checks, health care and discipline policies, procedures for filing grievances, as well as other policies and procedures.
